Bot or hologram dating? Why we're increasingly choosing body less sex
Let's face it; the dating world is one of the most difficult parts of society to navigate through. Some people hate dating so much that they hire other people to date and find someone to marry. This type of person is called a matchmaker. Many would rather job hunt than find a date. And once you finally have a date, you have to make sure they're not a crazy weirdo, or a murderer, or secretly have kids and just don't want to tell you until you're three months into the relationship. But what if you didn't have to deal with humans? What if you can have the option of dating a bot or a hologram?
You may not be able to have sex or even kiss your hologram lover, but with the right programming, they could satisfy all of your mental or emotional needs. And that is a benefit that a surprising amount of human beings can't do for their partner?
Can't get a date? Just get married to an object!
Dating a hologram or a computer program wasn't popular or even considered socially acceptable 20 years ago. But in the last few years, there have been many news stories around the world of an average person becoming symbolically married to computer simulations, bots, or even holograms.
A quick search through YouTube will reveal videos, video essays, and news stories surrounding people who married objects, fictional characters, and parts of nature.
There is also a woman who married a ghost. The ghost once walked the earth as a Haitian pirate. He lived in the 18th century. Unfortunately, they divorced because the pirate ghost husband tried to kill her. Yeah.
But the weird stories aren't over yet!! There was a third woman who got married to a tree. She did so because she wanted to keep it safe from lumber companies and developers. So it's not completely unheard of. It's just weird.
Humans even fall in love and have sex with animals. But that's bestiality, and that's illegal. The main reason why bestiality is illegal is that the animal cannot consent to sex. They don't have the brainpower to understand that they are a different species from humans, they do not know about consent, and having sex with a human is often painful since they don't have the appropriate body parts. If you ever see someone having sex with an animal, back away from them and just call the police.
The crazy thing about the women marrying the tree is that tree-human marriage is not weird in some parts of the world. Not so long ago, several small religious sects in India believed in the holy matrimony of tree marriage. A woman or a man was allowed to marry a tree to receive supernatural divine powers. The few religious sects that practice tree marriage believe the tree absorbs the souls of powerful ancestors from the area. So they were essentially getting married to a ghost.
It's the tree was harmed, felled, or cut down, the human being married to the trailer become a widower.
On September 12, 2020, the woman and the tree celebrated their first anniversary. We must assume the tree is happy in their relationship, as it has no way of communicating its unhappiness. Well, it looks healthy and watered, so that's good. Let's just hope it isn't cut down by an evil corporation that wants to put a shitty mini-mall in the area.
Can you date a program made of 1s and 0s?
But as you can see, human beings are just plain weird, and they will fall in love and get married to objects that are not alive in any way and don't have a conscience. It may be because we anthropomorphize animals and objects and give them human characteristics and traits.
So if a human can fall in love with a tree or roller coaster, how much easier would it be for large groups of human beings to fall in love with well-made, scripted, beautiful 3D characters who can talk, learn about you through AI technology, and the young and sexy forever?
It will be much easier than a human-human relationship, and we need to prepare for this possibility.
For example, in November 2018, a Japanese man named Akihiko Kondo married a hologram. But he didn't just marry a random hologram. He tied the knot to a cyber celebrity program called Hatsune Miku. If you have never heard of the Cyrus celebrity, she is a hologram designed to perform as a singer.
People who marry objects, computer programs, or holograms are not married in the eyes of the law. Their only choice is to perform a ceremonial marriage. But there is no government office willing to extend full legal marital rights to the happy couple.
But as computers become more and more advanced and companies develop AI helpers, society will have to start developing rules for human beings who want to date and become involved with romance-based computer software or holograms.
Already, there are multiple movies dedicated to the subject of human-computer romantic relations. Lifelike, Ex Machina, Her, Bicentennial Man, and let's not forget the anime, manga, comic books, and fiction books about human-AI/robot love.
The rise of VR
Ten years ago, if someone were to say that they were dating a computer program or a hologram, the picture that most people would imagine in their minds is not a friendly one. They would imagine a lonely, skinny, or morbidly obese person sitting in a dark corner in their room in their parent's home. The lights would be turned off, except for a single light that illuminated their face and computer screen. It would be here where the sad and lonely person would interact with their virtual love.
For the handful of people around the world who fell in love with computer programs in the decades before, this vivid scenario may have been true. But the human/computer relations of the future will be far more intimate, interactive, and all-encompassing. And these radical changes are all because of the existence of virtual reality.
In the world of virtual reality, reality can be whatever the designer demands. Once a person slips on their VR goggles, they are transported into a world entirely made by a human being. This experience is much more encompassing entering into a video game.
When players stare at a screen and play a video game, they stay in reality. Sure, players often get lost for hours in a game since they're enjoying it so much. But there are many ways they can step away from their video game.
As a player enters into a virtual reality video game, their entire being is encompassed by the game's programming. When I stare at their feet, they look at the feet of their character. When they stare at their hands, it is the character's hands they're looking at. If they look up, they will see the game level's sky or the roof of the building the character is standing in. If they stare into a mirror, they will see the character's face.
The way they view the video game character themselves will change some neural programming within the brain. Researchers are already studying the effect VR simulation has on players.
Virtual reality dating games
So when an advanced virtual reality dating game finally debuts, the player can spend time with their dating interest in ways that they could never before. Imagine taking the hand of the character you fall in love with and sitting for hours at a beach or lake. The character will be able to stare into your eyes just as the player stares into theirs. As Ai improves and develops more human-like responses, natural language programming will make conversations easier. The character will reflect the program's romantic interests in the character along with their unique personality.
In the future, we can expect fights over who loves the character more. Players will be able to marry the character in the game. In addition to a loving spouse, we are positive that certain games will allow players and romantic interests to start a family.
There are many romance VR Games available, and few of them, not many though, are quite advanced and have characters with well-developed personalities.
With all these different technologies developing at the same time, there's one question we must ask ourselves: besides sexual relations, why would a human being want a flesh-and-blood spouse when they could have a perfect spouse that is attractive, talented, entertaining, will never cheat on them, and will perform sexual acts out for them on command?
The thing aspect of human-human relationships that are missing from an AI/human relationship is touching. But that might not be a deal-breaker for many people. They aren't touched by a human being already, so why not date a sexy computer simulation that can't touch you but can do nearly everything else? Sounds like a good relationship for many lonely people.
But what if your AI lover could touch you. The developers of VR headset systems and devices are working on technology that can replicate touching. And it won't be long until they are done.
VR bodysuits, toys, and sensations
So the only true permanent setback is creating a child together. But hundreds of millions of people are choosing not to have children. There are numerous reasons to not have a child in this day and age. The cost of childcare is rising, jobs and managers don't care about work-life balance, and the world is becoming more dangerous. And even if all that did not exist, we are in the final years of reversing global warming. If things don't improve by 2030, the planet and our lives will change, and the damage can never be reversed.
So not having a child is not a big deal for a good chunk of the population. And if enough people want a child storyline, AI developers and VR game system designers will create a child that people can care for as if it was a flesh-and-blood human. But the power of the internet and technology, anything is possible, which may not be a good thing.
Is it love or just selfishness?
All the people who fell in love with objects say that they are deeply in love, and many people feel a sense of romantic love towards dating game sim characters and fictional characters in Romance stories. But are they truly experiencing a selfless romantic love? Or are they falling into a type of love that is completely self-centered? AI and Bots are programmed to learn about the user. With enough information and time, an algorithm can learn exactly what does and does not make the human user happy. So, in a relationship between an AI program and a human, humans have their every whim and emotion catered to.
This isn't what a true human-human relationship is about. There was always some given take. Good partners consider their partner's feelings and their own, and they make compromises so that each person is happy. But an AI has no needs or wants. So the human user never has to worry about what the AI wants. All they have to do is turn on the simulation or the game and start interacting with it.
They will never deny the human user sex or sexual acts. It will always be ready with a story or something cute to say. They will never ask their human to compromise on anything. Is an AI human relationship as healthy as a human-human relationship? It's hard to say, but we won't be surprised if it isn't.
Conclusion
Only time and technology will reveal the impact virtual reality dating games will have on the Romantic lives of video game players. Major institutions worldwide have already noted that online dating is quickly becoming the most popular way to meet your long-term romantic partner or spouse. Not only that, people have less sex and fewer romantic partners throughout their lives. So what happens when your romantic interest is always available on the internet 24/7?
