Sasha Grey Reads to Compton Kids

Reading is very important to the development of children. For most of history, nearly all people could not read or write. So, it is a blessing now that nearly 6 billion people across the planet can read and write to some degree.

Hopefully, within this century, we can bring that number all the way up to 7.2 billion or whatever the current population is. However, it is important to know that your child is being taught to read by a professional educator who has experience teaching children how to read.

But does it matter who reads to kids? There's no way an issue can arise after reading to kids, right? There's no way someone could mess up reading from a book, right? Any adult could read to any child and there would be no problems. Well, we thought so too. But it turns out that parents dislike it when famous pornstars read to their children at their school.

The incident

We've established that teaching children to read is a noble pursuit. But apparently not anyone can teach children to read. In fact, not anyone can just read to a child.

So, what are we talking about? Well, parents became extremely upset when they realized that the elementary School where they send their children to learn about science, math, reading, being kind to one another, and other critical subjects, allowed a female pornstar named Sasha Grey to read Dog Breath by Dav Pilkey to their children. The incident happened in November 2011, and the school where it happened is Emerson Elementary School in Compton.

Actually, perhaps it was just the mothers that became angry when they heard their children were in the presence of a pornstar. The fathers were probably upset that they did not get an invitation to the read-along.

Like many schools in the US, Emerson Elementary School takes part in a popular program known as Read Across America. Emerson Elementary School is in Compton, and it educates children from preschool all the way to 8th grade. The school is also part of the Compton Unified School District.

The district also created its own Guest Reading Program so that parents and teachers can bring guests to any school within the district. The guests can register to read to the students, which would take the pressure off teachers and allow children to interact with different adults in a safe environment. The Guest Reading Program is not a part of Read Across America.

So, because the Guest Reading Programs is a district-level program, Sasha Grey had to be okayed by several administrators and teachers before she could step on school grounds. No one is allowed to walk into a school and start reading to kids.

According to multiple sources, Sasha Grey read a book to the first and third graders. She also spoke with them and played with the children for a bit. If no one had known who Sasha Grey was, they would have thought that she was a friend of a student's family. Nothing terrible or unsavory took place. She was very polite, and she did her best to make reading time as enjoyable as possible for everyone.

It's important to note that Sasha Grey was no longer part of the adult film industry during this time. She had actually been out of the adult film industry for several months.

At first, the school absolutely denied that the pornstar was anywhere near the elementary school. However, TMZ had photos of Sasha reading to the children and interacting with them. When the photos were revealed to the media, the school stopped answering any and all phone calls from media and news stations.

Sasha Gray herself also announced to the whole world that she was at Emerson Elementary on November 2nd. Shee posted a message on her Twitter, which states,

“I am proud to have participated in the Read Across America program at Emerson Elementary School in Compton, California. I read Dog Breath by Dave Pilkey to the sweetest first and third-grade children.”

So, any plans of denial that the school had were obviously futile, as her Twitter has the truth of what happened on that day.

Not only were the parents furious, but they also even filed complaints with a Parent-Teacher Association. Many of the parents wanted to know exactly who invited her to school and if they knew about her former profession.

Even though this happened all the way back in 2011, Google still existed at that time. Did no one think to search her name? Or maybe they did search her name and did not care? Or maybe the principal just wanted to meet one of his favorite pornstars and this was the only way he could meet her?

Unfortunately, the school already had a bad reputation, and this incident did not improve other people's opinion of the school in any way. The school has been known for its high rate of failing students, a lackluster faculty, dilapidated buildings, and old equipment.

After looking at several news stories about the incident, we cannot determine if anybody was punished or fired for allowing a pornstar to read to 1st and 3rd graders.
